Thanksgiving

Peach November 27th, 2008

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. The day we Americans stuff ourselves until we feel like bloated ticks. It’s the day we travel to be with family so we can shout over each other and laugh at and with each other.

This year our daughter and her new boyfriend will come over and probably a few other police officers. A lot of our officers come from New York and have to work so they don’t get to go home. We are lucky enough to have a few come and share dinner with us. My husband does the cooking and he always makes to much food. I’m a sucker for cop stories.

It’s a bit different this year. It’s the first year since my husband and I have been married that we are both without a job. We are blessed to have always had a steady income, now we are like so many others in America who are without jobs. Unlike some though we will be alright, it’s just a bit scary. It makes you realize how much we take for granted.

I wish you all peace, love and happiness from the bottom of my heart.

Happy Thanksgiving

Oh those shameful beauty secrets

rehna November 13th, 2008

By Bethany Lye

We may act like it’s effortless, but “real” female beauty is a delicate mix of gloss—anti-wrinkle moisturizers, Wonderbras and sucking it all in at just the right moment. We women sneak in and out of the spa with suspiciously little to say about how we passed the time. So, finally, here are five of our beauty routines revealed. Continue Reading »

The Changeling

Peach November 4th, 2008

You think Hollywood isn’t prejudice? I remember when the critics gave Cold Mountain bad reviews because they didn’t want it to be considered for a Oscar (a grudge with the producer). When the movie became a DVD suddenly it was given an A. Same thing with The Changeling. The critics haven’t really warmed up to Clint Eastwoods latest movie citing Angelina Jolie’s beauty is distracting. Apparently they don’t feel beautiful women can be mothers?

I like true crime stories so I read up on the Chicken Coop Murders before I ever went to see the movie. I wanted to see if Eastwood would stay close to the real story. He did. He also crossed all his T’s and dotted all his i’s. What he did was tell a complete story from beginning to end with honesty and compassion. We were never bogged down with any one emotion for long, sadness, anger, or utter shock. We are dealing with a era in our nations history when women had just gotten the right to vote - a woman was still considered fragile and unable to care for herself and Eastwood did a wonderful job of quietly bringing all this out for the audience.

Not knowing what to expect I sat down with a open mind. It was hard because I hadn’t forgotten Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil another Eastwood directed movie, one he didn’t do justice to by a long shot. However with The Changeling his attention to details was amazing, from the gloves to the hats women always wore, to the ice box, cars, houses, mannerisms all done to perfection of the era. I especially liked the trolley cars - after the Korean war driving a trolley was my Dads first job. Watching Angelina Jolie move around on key skates (pretty comfortably) was another attention to detail. Before long you find yourself thrown back to the era of knickers and unlocked doors.

This is one of those stories that needs to be told, much like In Cold Blood. It reminds us why we need a system of checks and balances in regards to our judical system. When the very people we rely on, depend on, are the very ones who abuse us, it makes it all the harder to watch. It’s the reason we become invested in Christine, we want something good for her. You have to wonder what would have happened had the Reverend  Gustav Briegleb (John Malkovich) not interceded for her, if  Detective Lester Ybarra (Michael Kelly) hadn’t ignored a direct order and investigated the case further.  This is a story that needed to be told, not only because of the twenty children who lost their lives but because it reminds us one person can make a difference in the world, one person can make the world a better place.

This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. I hope to see it again when my husband comes home. Out of 5 stars I’d give it 5 stars and whats more my picky daughter agreed.
