Reading the news in this day and age is very irritating. I just read an article where a twenty year old father, unhappy in his marriage, punched his two month old daughter in the face and then put her in the microwave for three seconds. He, of course, is going to plead temporary insanity. Doesn’t he realize the trauma that poor child is going to have to put up with the rest of her life? If he was unhappy in his marriage why didn’t he get counseling, file for a divorce, or just leave? That child didn’t ask to be born nor did it ask for it’s parents. The poor little tike was two months old, she had no way of defending herself. Continue Reading »

Humanitarian acts are in the news every day as reported by Hollywood. Celebs like Angelina, George, Bono, Oprah are being continuously reported to be involved in causes either due to roles as ambassadors or just having the finances to make an area of devastation or poverty a more liveable environment for humanity. But there is also a group of people that many don’t hear about so frequently. Today on a web site news sections there was an article about two school friends who now share a kidney. What a selfless act of that donor! To be able to give the recipient a new chance on life. How wonderful is that! This is a subject close to my heart because not only do I work everyday in a dialysis center, but my own husband is on a transplant list awaiting a kidney.

As a sociologist and an American who has lived most of my life in this country, I’m often amused by certain aspects of American culture. I am by no means unpatriotic; I just like to point out our occasional foibles and instead of leaving it at that, I often feel compelled to comment on them. Thank you, Readers, for allowing me to empty the ‘miscellaneous’ bin of my cerebellum. Continue Reading »

OK, so I am not a mom, but the constant fight between stay-at-home moms and working moms really gets me riled up. TLC (U.S. station that we get in Canada; not sure if you guys get it in Britain) is apparently launching a new reality show called “Secret Life of a Soccer Mom.” In it, women who have been stay-at-home moms and out of the workforce for years are given a chance to resume their careers, supposedly without their families knowing - not too sure how that works, but anyways. Now, I’m sure the show is imperfect, like most reality TV, but it seems to be an interesting topic. The show itself, I would think, isn’t something that would upset anyone? Right? Um, wrong. On MSN today there’s an article that says stay-at-home moms are bombarding the show’s message board with vitriolic posts about how wrong it is to imply a woman might need a career to feel fulfilled. One particularly even-tempered and fair poster even called working while you have children “child abandonment!” Excuse me??? Why do I get the feeling more and more these days that feminism never actually happened? And more importantly, WHAT BUSINESS IS IT OF THEIRS? Why do stay-at-home moms feel the need to attack working moms (and maybe it works both ways), and why is it never assumed that men should have to face the work vs. raising children dilemma, even in 2008? Thoughts?? I have more but I’m at work right now, so let the discussion begin…

You won’t find a bigger Madge fan than Tom Townshend but he can’t help thinking she’s been losing the plot for years…
We’d like to begin what will ultimately be a biased, vitriolic, and questionable attack on the woman most of us have come to know as the singer, songwriter, actor, author, film director, wife, and mother Madonna, by stating that we ultimately believe her to be the greatest pop star this world has ever seen.
It’s just that the world hasn’t seen her being great for quite some time. Continue Reading »
