Salt -Angelina Jolie takes on the Hollywood men

rehna September 2nd, 2010

Her detractors (almost all women) like to claim that women don’t like Angelina Jolie.
They should have been at the premieres for Salt in London, Paris and Berlin and seen the women, young and old, black and white perching precariously on high walls, clamouring up lamp-posts and hanging from the nearest statue of a long dead statesman or royal, just to catch a glimpse of her. They clutched their posters of Salt and strained every muscle in their bodies just to be able to say (as one woman put it) ‘I was there, I saw her.’ Continue Reading »

Jennifer Aniston’s latest dud bombs at the box office

rehna August 26th, 2010

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/jennifer-aniston-and-the-curse-of-friends-2060136.html

Even the quality broadsheet newspapers are tired of Jennifer Aniston. The above article from the Independent is harsh but accurate when it asks the question ‘When will Hollywood give up on Jennifer Aniston?
Forbes magazine has asked the question as have other notable US publications.

The questions came as Iggy Pop lookalike Ms Aniston unleashed her latest cinematic turd on the world last week and the weary world responded by giving her an embarrasing $8million back. Even for a cheap film, (the only sort Aniston is offered) it was a kick in the teeth for the National Enquirer queen. With a large publicity budget to be added to the $16 million production cost the film can be filed under major flop since Aniston films make negligible money outside the USA. Continue Reading »

BHUTTO - an exclusive interview with Duane Baughman director of the film

Interview by Rehna

Bhutto film trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwAPubfJ0r8

Q. Having made this film and lived with the Benazir legacy for 3 years how do you see Benazir’s position in modern history?

A. Without question the purpose of the film was to enlighten people like me, western men, who have been sheltered from an accurate depiction of this family who have left an indelible mark on Pakistan. Benazir is undeniably the transformative female figure of this country and even region. She’s the best known politician no-one knows in terms of her achievements. The first woman leader of a Muslim country. A woman with a spine of steel who broke the glass ceiling in the Muslim world which a women has yet to do even in a country as advanced as the USA.
Whatever your view of Benazir’s politics, her role in history is certainly secured. Continue Reading »

Angelina Jolie to play Cleopatra

rehna June 12th, 2010

It seems pretty official; the current Queen of Hollywood is to reprise the role of a former Queen of Hollywood (Elizabeth Taylor) as the Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra.
Inspired and perfect casting, without doubt. And if they get Brad to play Marc Anthony the show is really on the road.

For the tabloid rags that have waged a relentess war against Angelina for 5 years, well, they always have the ‘news’ that their cut price poor Jen will masturbate on camera at the age of 42 and that she’s eaten the same salad for 10 years :lol_wp:

The HEROINE’S STORY - discussion thread

rehna March 28th, 2010

Hi everyone
This is the place for you to discuss any matter you want with others from the course (and anyone else you think might be interested to join).

We can continue discussing a topic from the course
We can discuss an entirely new subject about women in movies

We can share tips etc.
We can ask questions about our personal projects.

I start with a question:
My script centres around a teenage girl and her mother. Their relationship is disrupted by a third party but the 3P is a less important character than mother and daughter. I wanted a a visually strong opening scene that has immediate impact. So I wrote it with daughter and 3P appearing first.

However, I’ve been advised that my opening scene should feature the mother and daughter as they are the central characters ie that I shoud set up the relationship before I set about disrupting it via the 3P. I’ve re-written it and it makes more sense but has less immediate impact.

Any thoughts?

The London Film Critics Awards

rehna February 21st, 2010

I’ve met Quentin Tarantino 3 times now. It’s surely only a question of time before I’m cast as the ultra violent lead in a female Reservoir dogs. But for now QT is playing his cards close to his chest on that one.

Yes, it was the London Film critics awards on Thursday; my favourite awards of the year. Informal, relaxed and irreverent, it’s the place where I’ve got to shoot the breeze with the likes of Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren et al without PR minders blustering around like over protective flies. Plus it’s the only awards which directly benefit a charity, the NSPCC, a cause close to my heart. Continue Reading »

Nowhere Boy - film review

rehna December 6th, 2009

If you think you largely know about John Lennon, think again. Nowhere Boy, the feature debut from artist Sam Taylor-Wood, takes a look at the formative years of the cultural icon revered by millions thirty years after his death at the hands of a disturbed ‘fan.’
Nowhere Boy is not a Lennon biopic. It is a beautifully sensitive portrayal of a family torn apart by the social norms of the day while presenting a wealth of imaginatively presented insights into what early experiences fuelled a musical genius. Interestingly, throughout the film, the word ‘Beatles’ is not mentioned once. Continue Reading »
